VERY RARE Edition of the Constitutions of the Congregation of Santa Cruz de Coimbra that Anselmo only gives news from a handwritten note found in the BN. According to Inocêncio, the work had Fr. Brás de Barros, first bishop of Leiria and responsible for the reform of the Order of Canons Regular of Saint Augustine, whose main monastery was Santa Cruz de Coimbra. Born in Braga, Fr. Brás de Barros, cousin of João de Barros, after having received the habit in Sintra and having studied theology at the University of Louvain, was appointed by D. João III to reform the Order and its studies, starting his mission on 13 October 1527 in Coimbra. On May 22, 1545, he became the first Bishop of Leiria, resigning his post 5 years later, retiring to his monastery of origin and dying there in 1559. These Constitutions were published for the first time in 1532, having known several editions after that, all printed on the Monastery's presses. According to Anselm, who gives us the most complete list, in the 16th century, editions were published in 1532, 1534, 1536, 1544, 1548, 1553 and 1558. This one from 1553 was the only one that Anselm did not see any copies of. According to the bibliographer, the reference was obtained from a handwritten note existing in the National Library and which had been made from the copy of A. Moreira Cabral. Like all editions from the presses of the Monastery of Santa Cruz de Coimbra, it is a true masterpiece as far as printing is concerned, containing a full-page engraving on the back of the frontispiece a representation of a chapter meeting and several capitulars, all executed in excellent quality wood.
