MANUSCRITO. D. MANUEL II

CARTA dirigida a Penha Garcia. Londres: 1919, 23 de Fevereiro.

manuscrito sobre papel; assinatura autógrafa; 4 ff.; 230 mm.

Extensive letter from D. Manuel II addressed to the Count of Penha Garcia, José Capelo Franco Frazão, giving his opinion and steps he should take after the events of the so-called "Northern Monarchy". The letter begins with a reference to the 1919 Paris Peace Conference following the end of the Great War, to which Sidónio Pais had invited the Count to represent Portugal. El-Rei is in favor of choosing Penha Garcia, but regretting that he had not come to London, as he had asked by telegram, to talk about the matter. Then begins an extensive dissertation on the events and consequences of the so-called "Northern Monarchy", breaking the silence "to answer him, with absolute frankness and affectionate firmness." In this context, El-Rei considers the country’s situation to be particularly serious, and the attempt at a monarchical revolution should be considered "in such a way as to worry all the Portuguese who still have love for their land." He is totally against it, stating that they took place “against my instructions and without my knowledge.” Contextualizing the event, he makes reference to several republican upheavals from 1914 to 1919, all of them under the responsibility of the Republicans, arriving chronologically at the attempted monarchic revolution: «Finally, after all that I mentioned, the monarchists entered the seine [sic] and then that they have given loyal and patriotic support under my direction to the government of President Pais. He wanted to try a moderate Republic, and he was the only man who could. Who found him at your side? Me and my supporters! What was the result you got? Or being murdered!” And he concludes, “it was a mistake, no doubt this monarchic move, made without my approval.” The letter then follows with El Rei’s argument that led him to decide not to address the country about the event. A very interesting letter, which gives us an insight into the state of mind of D. Manuel II after that failed attempt to restore the monarchy.
