António Carvalho da Costa was born in Lisbon in 1650 and died in 1715, devoting his entire life to the study of "the mathematical sciences that he professed, and the history and topography of the kingdom" (vd. Inoc.). This work of his is divided into three parts, the first on the projection of spheres on a plane, construction of universal and particular maps and the making of Hydrographic Charts; the second on Hydrography of the Seas and the third with the geographical description of the lands. Very rare.
