Father Gaspar Barreiros (?-1574), João de Barros' nephew, is considered one of the best Portuguese classical writers. In this pioneering travel book, he describes the journey he undertook through Spain, the South of France and Northern Italy. The section "Commentaria de Ohyra regione…" contains references to Columbus and other discoverers of the American continent, where Ophir, the mysterious land of Gold, was traditionally located.
