FIRST edition of this important account of the History of the Island of Ceylon, “still considered today as a primary source for the history of Ceylon in the seventeenth century” [D.Hist. Port.]. João Ribeiro, born in Lisbon and the son of mechanical parents, left as a soldier for India in 1640, staying for 18 years on the island of Ceylon. Returning to Portugal, he participated in the campaigns of 66-65, being wounded in the capture of Valença de Alcântara and promoted to captain for his bravery. He went to Funchal in 1668 where he stayed until his return to Lisbon in 1680 where he wrote this treatise. With the original title 'Historical Fatality of the Island of Ceylon', which he dedicated to D. Pedro II in 1685, this work of his was only published in print in 1836, having known several English editions between 1847 and 1949. This French translation is, therefore, his first print edition. In the catalog of the counts of Azevedo-Samodães we find a detailed description of the work, including the 8 engravings that represent: 1. plan of Canellier; 2. Talagaija plant; 3. map of Columbus and its fortresses; 4. view of Ponta de Gale; 5. plan of the Baye de Triquinimale, et de Cotiari; 6. Isle of Manar; 7. 'Plan de la Ville et du Château de Kandi Capitale de l'isle de Ceylan'; 8. a large map entitled “Carte de l'Isle de Ceylan”. Very rare.
