FIRST EDITION. Born in Setúbal, Tomás António dos Santos e Silva was born, according to Inocêncio, surrounded by misfortune. Coming from a humble family, he was sponsored by his godfather at baptism, Judge Tomás da Costa de Almeida Castelo Branco, and managed to study until he entered the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra. Due to the death of his godfather, he was forced to abandon his studies, starting a pharmaceutical career in his hometown. Due to the premature death of his fiancée, he decided to leave his hometown and go to Lisbon, where he also practiced pharmacy for some time, later devoting himself to literature, writing dramatic pieces in prose and verse performed at the Salitre theatre. In 1791 he joined Nova Arcadia under the name Thomino Sadino. He became blind and sick, and his most fruitful literary work was from this period. Died in 1816.
