First edition of this lively first-hand account of events in Portugal in 1834, during the so-called "War of the Two Brothers", illustrated with a color engraving of the Battle of Santarém (1834), a vignette on the title page, and an engraved map showing the position of Dona Maria's army before the battle. The author, Major-General James Edward Alexander 1803–1885), witnessed the Portuguese Civil War as Captain of the 42 High Highlanders and Lieutenant-Colonel in the Portuguese Service. A large part of his book is devoted to war, but it also contains numerous observations on life, customs, trade, the landscape and buildings in the country, as well as an epilogue with passionate reflection on Portugal's immediate future. in the context of the conflict.
