FIRST EDITION. RARE of one of the most important poetic works of the 17th century in Portugal. Francisco Rodrigues Lobo is, for many, the most typical personality of the literature of this period and the highest representative of the Camonian tradition. According to Nelson de Almeida [Byblos, v. 3, c. 219], “it is as a bucolist that the poetic art of FRÇ reaches the highest degree of value and stylistic refinement […]. The skilful and harmonious verse, the metaphor of perfect conception, the melodious grace of proof, endure indefinite sadness, melancholy, the lament against envy and covetousness […]”. These Eclogues are, together with the “Primavera” trilogy, the work that best represents all the literary talent of Francisco Rodrigues Lobo and one of the most important works printed in the 17th century. It also has a very important «Discourse on the Life and Style of Pastors», a theoretical booklet that seeks to justify bucolism.
