COLLECTION Complete in the part relating to the journey of the expedition commanded by Henrique Augusto Dias de Carvalho. A contemporary of Brito Capelo and Roberto Ivens, Henrique Dias de Carvalho (1843-1909) was sent on an expedition to Muatiânvua in 1884. The trip took around four years and its main objectives were commercial connections with the people of Quimbundo, Cuango and Cassai , but also contacts with Mussumba to prepare the conditions for the local establishment of Portuguese under the protection of the court in that region. It also had important results from a scientific point of view, providing in-depth knowledge about multiple aspects of the area with regard to geography, climatic conditions, navigability of rivers, fauna, flora, agriculture, history, anthropology, ethnography and language of the people who remained extensively documented in this work of his. The documents and monuments resulting from the exhibition, which include, in addition to handwritten texts, a huge photographic collection and a museum collection, are today preserved at the Lisbon Geography Society. Henrique Dias de Carvalho influenced the creation of the Lunda district, established in 1895 and of which he was the 1st Governor. Other monographic volumes were published on the meteorology, ethnography or language of the people of that region. Very rare and important.
