FOURIER (Jean Baptiste Joseph)

THÉORIE Analytique de la Chaleur. A Paris: Chez Firmin Didot, 1822.

[4], xxii, 640 pp., 2 eng.: il.; 260 mm. Contemporary half calf; super-libros "LE MARÉCHAL DE SALDANHA"; marbled trimmed edges.

FIRST EDITION of Fourier’s most important work and one of the most important in the history of science. "Joseph Fourier’s name is one of the most commonly used by mathematicians, physicists or engineers. We talk about Fourier series, Fourier coefficients, Fourier integrals, Fourier transformation, Fourier equation, Fourier analysis. Fourier series have served as a starting point or test bench for all fundamental notions of mathematical analysis. The Fourier equation, which governs the propagation of heat, is the paradigm for a perfect mathematical modeling of a physical phenomenon. […] Inheritance of Fourier, constantly updated, is part of the modern world". [Dhombres, p.5] The work began to be drafted in Grenoble and it was a theme that occupied him from that moment until the end of his life. In 1805 he wrote a first draft. In 1807 he sent the manuscript of a communication to the Academy and in the autumn of 1811 he sent a second version with a view to winning a prize. These two texts constitute the essence of the work that only saw print in 1822. [cf. Dhombres, p. 443] Very rare, important and very valuable.
