D. Francisco Manuel de Melo, born in 1608 in Lisbon, studied at the Colégio de Santo Antão dos Jesuítas, was a soldier under the command of Diogo de Mendonça Furtado, embarked on the fleet of the Crown that was shipwrecked in 1627, fought against the Turks, in combat having been knighted for his accomplishments, he attended the Madrid court where he became friends with Quevedo, one of the most important literary personalities of the time in Castile, also making contact with Lope de Vega, Calderón, Tirso de Molina, among others. When the Restoration Revolution took place, he was arrested and taken to Madrid where he stayed for 4 months. In 1644 he was arrested again for reasons unknown to us. He remained in the Castle, then transferred to the Torre de Belém, was tried and sentenced for instigation of murder to perpetual exile to the coasts of Africa, in the second instance to the exile to India, ending up being decided in the third instance the exile in Brazil where he was for eleven years. In 1655 he left for the New World, returning to exile in 1658, taking refuge in his farm in Entre-Rios. In 1660 he was in Lisbon animating the sessions of the Academia dos Generosos and during the government of Castelo- Melhor, of whom he was a friend, he was in charge of several important diplomatic missions. Upon his return, he was nominated for deputy on the Three-State Board. He died in 1666. Possessor of a vast and lively culture, he "brought out an astonishing work" [Dic.Lit.] coming to be considered by M. y Pelayo the greatest literary figure of the time, after Quevedo. Rebelo da Silva states that D. Francisco Manuel de Melo should be considered "one of the first scholars of his time and perhaps the most substantial and concise prose writer in the Portuguese language" [cit. of Dic.Lit.]. The published texts are immense and spread throughout history, where there are classic works such as "As Epanáforas de Varia História" or "Historia de los Movimientos y separación de Cataluña y de la Guerra entre la Magestad Católica by Don Dilipe el Cuarto Rey de Castilla y de Aragón y la Deputación General de aquel principalado", poetry, controversy and various other themes. Work published posthumously. Rare and treasured.
